Born in New Jersey in 1969, with family roots in Spain and Scotland, Derek now enjoys walking the beaches of Costa Rica, in search for unique pieces of driftwood to create sculptures that he himself, could not repeat.

He was raised in several countries of South and Central America, and graduated from the University of California at Riverside. After completing his education, Derek moved to Mexico to expand the sales territory of his family’s business, while also traveling to the Orient, Europe and Latin America.

In this continuous changing environment, he learned to find what is special in each place, each person he encounters or each life situation. In this same way, he now searches for what is special in each “abandoned” piece of wood.

He is married and has 3 children.
